Booking a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) permit is required for any overnight paddle trip. While the process can seem confusing at first, it’s straightforward once you know the steps. This guide explains how to book a Boundary Waters permit, what information you need ahead of time, and how Boundary Waters Outfitters can help.
Before booking your Boundary Waters permit, it’s important to know your trip dates and desired entry point. Having a general route plan significantly improves your chances of securing a permit.
If you’d like help with this step, call Boundary Waters Outfitters at 218-365-3466. We can provide interactive maps and custom BWCA canoe routes tailored to your group, experience level, and trip length.
Boundary Waters Outfitters is a licensed outfitter and official cooperator with the United States Forest Service, which allows us to reserve BWCA permits on behalf of our guests.
However, guests who are comfortable booking their own permit often have the best chance of securing their first-choice entry point, especially on permit release day. Many paddlers book their permit independently and then work with us for canoe rentals, gear, food packs, and trip planning support.
All Boundary Waters permits are booked through Recreation.gov. Follow the steps below to reserve your permit.
Once your permit is secured, contact Boundary Waters Outfitters to finalize your canoe rental, gear, food packages, or lodging if you have not already done so. Booking your outfitting services early helps ensure availability and allows us to help you prepare for a successful Boundary Waters canoe trip.
