Know Your Route Before Booking

Before booking your Boundary Waters permit, it’s important to know your trip dates and desired entry point. Having a general route plan significantly improves your chances of securing a permit.

If you’d like help with this step, call Boundary Waters Outfitters at 218-365-3466. We can provide interactive maps and custom BWCA canoe routes tailored to your group, experience level, and trip length.

Can Boundary Waters Outfitters Book My Permit?

Boundary Waters Outfitters is a licensed outfitter and official cooperator with the United States Forest Service, which allows us to reserve BWCA permits on behalf of our guests.

However, guests who are comfortable booking their own permit often have the best chance of securing their first-choice entry point, especially on permit release day. Many paddlers book their permit independently and then work with us for canoe rentals, gear, food packs, and trip planning support.

Important Information Before Booking

  • Boundary Waters permits typically go on sale the last Wednesday in January at 9:00 AM Central Time.
  • You only need a permit for your entry date, not for each day of your trip.
  • It’s recommended to have backup entry points or alternate trip dates in case your first choice is unavailable.
